40!

Matt smith, best spouse ever, put together a 30 minute video of friends and family wishing me well. This is the message I sent them after I laughed and cried while watching it:

Sweet Corn on the Cob y'all got me in the feels with the 40th birthday video! I love y'all and I just wanna make y'all proud and I always hope that my actions show you how much I care about your friendship and even though we don't always get to see each other we often joke that once we're friends you are stuck with me (just ask Dr. Laden! lol) ! Most of y'all know what I mean when I say y'all have helped me heal and really influenced my life and the lessons y'all give me continue to challenge me to be a better person every day and to be present and have gratitude and show love. The grace extended to me moving through adulthood when I made mistakes or stumbled has manifested into a deep well of forgiveness and acceptance for myself and for others. The peace that lies over my path has been hard fought and well worth it. My birthday wish to be able to give back even a quarter of the love y'all have poured into me. And shoutout to us all entering a new decade- 40 will be awesome!!

Best part of my birthday was going to Belize. A full week of family time and rest. It was hard- I was distracted. The night we arrived, there was an tragedy on our campus back home. But, my staff and colleagues handled it in the most compassionate and competent way, and supported me in taking a real break. San Pedro Island is not known for good wifi! I stayed in touch by text with a handful of people and it was heavy on my heart that I was not there. And had no easy way of getting there. We had been preparing for months, knowing we were one incident away from true crisis and we had weathered a few close calls. Each day, I did a check in, then turned it off to focus on being present with my family. Which felt even more important than before....

Belize highlights:

1. It was super safe. They still had curfew and masks mandates and covid was not political, but an illness they took serious. We could not even leave the airport without showing our vaccine cards, negative tests, and proof of Belizean insurance! Took 2 hours to get out of customs.

2. Super diverse culturally!! Y'all, do yourselves a favor and do some reading up on how Belize came to be. It's in Central America and shares a border wit Mexico and Guatemala. With its gorgeous coasts, everybody has tried to colonize it (hello trauma) but the Mayan's and indigenous folx still have a significant presence and land (hey resilience!)  we had french pastries, lebanese coffee, italian pizza, vietnamese dumplings, pupasas, conche, lobster, all kinds of fruits and veggies and chocolate...lots of chocolate!

3. Swimming with sharks and sea turtles and rays was probably Cass's favorite.

4. Savannah preferred swimming at the not so secret Secert Beach. Lol.

5. Matt made a last minute decision to sign us up for a river boat tour of protected jungle and a hike through Lamanai.

6. The exchange rate for the dollar is 2 to 1!!! Probably the most affordable vacay we have ever taken.

7. The folx who run the place we stayed were so kind and helpful. The condo had a full kitchen and cooked a lot. The beach was outside our balcony.

Alright, time for pictures!

R.O.P.E. in Accra, Ghana- July 2024

Joining Rites of Passage and Empowerment (ROPE) has been key in helping us find community out here in the Berkshires. No sugar coating- this county is both white, rural, conservative, racist and full of theatre, music, the outdoors, and pockets of loving, open-minded people. Massachusetts may be the most liberal state in the US, but we are far from Boston. Here, minutes from New York and Vermont, the sounds of performative equity can be heard from the tone deaf school administrators who "don't see color" and have voiced that "race was not an issue till we brought it up", to the lack of representation in politics, restaurants, stores, and general day to day. We have lived in places across the country, and have yet to stumble upon a place that felt fully welcoming. I don't say this to complain, it is merely a statement of my lived experience thus far and an acknowledgement of the work it takes as a Black woman to make friends, have meaningful relationships, g...

After you clean your room...

This evening Cassidy revealed to me a small secret to keeping her occupied. After dinner she asked me if she could watch a show. We don't have tv, but we do have netflix through the wii on our tv and we watch all the greatness that PBS and Nickelodian have to offer! Except for Caillou because I think he's kind of whiny. Anyway, she gets to watch limited amounts of Diego, Dora, Dinosaur Train, Super Why, Word World, etc and sometimes we throw in some Cosby Show for good measure. She'll pick two shows and watch one, 20 minute episode of each and then we call it good. Well tonight when she asked for a show, I told her she could watch one episode of her favorite after she cleaned her room. She went into her room and as she started putting toys away, she started playing with them. She'd go to put books away and start "reading" them. Twenty minutes later she'd start putting crayons away, then start drawing with them. Ten minutes later she'd start putting awa...

Back 2 School 2024/2025

The start of a new school year is scattered and quite full as we begin the fall with a bang on multiple campuses.  We gave Savannah a few options for her start to middle-school. She was at WES for 3 years and had made a solid, core group of friends- super strong connections! All of them were headed to the zoned school of Greylock regional, grades 7-12. Going to Greylock wither friends would mean we would have to drive her, school choice does not provide a bus. It would mean she could not do all the things because of the commute and our schedules, her options to get involved would be limited. If she chose to go to the school we were now zoned for, she would be walking distance to Miss Halls and could do alllll the things- go for it! Join every club, try out for the plays, do all the sports.  Y'all already know, Savvy chose her friends lol. It is hard. And she is so happy. And never complains, because she understands with this choice, her options are limited. We have been ...
