The Many Misadventures of A Dog Named Biscuit

Once upon a time, two cocker spaniels were found wandering around California. Some very kind people picked them up and fed them. They named them Starsky and Hutch. While this decision was unfortunate, it would be corrected when a family would come to pick them up.

After much deliberation, their new names were much more reflective of their sparkly personalities: Biscuit and Gravy. Biscuit, Gravy, and the family had a blissful few months. These two friends were quite the pair! Incredibly smart, always up to trouble. Being older, they didn't chew things and were house trained. Being spaniels, their smarts would bring upon the first  tragedy. One cleverly dug hole under a fence and Biscuit and Gravy were loose. Sadly, Gravy was hit by a car. Biscuit made his way home and was quite sad for a spell. He was happy to be comforted by the family.

Years went by and Biscuit settled even more in his old age. Rarely barking, Biscuit was known to try to speak like his humans. His little warbly ruff was a source of amusement, often rewarded with the treat he had his eye set on.

It was not long before it was time for the family to move on. While the family was getting the new home ready for Biscuit, Biscuit was bringing some much needed love to the neighbors. In a turn of events, it was decided it would be best for Biscuit to remain where he was. While the family was indeed very sad and slightly dismayed, they truly believed this was what was best. Biscuit was loved by a very large family for a little over two years before a second tragedy befell him. One of the neighbors tasked with his care became unwell and was unable to care for him. Biscuit, knowing it was time for him to seek out help began to run away. With each jaunt from the neighbors, a stranger would find him, and call his family. The neighbors had not changed his tags. This was to be a gift as the family who was so sad to leave him, was making every effort to retrieve him now that his journey with the neighbors had come to an end.

Through the kindness of many strangers, Biscuit rode hundreds of miles to reunite with his family. To his surprise, the family had rescued another dog! Shorty was older, but spunky and Shorty and Biscuit became best buddies.  The family remembered how much Biscuit loved Gravy, and fully understood that Biscuit was at his best when with a friend. Over the next couple of years, Biscuit and Shorty grew older and closer. As they grew older, they grew slower. In his 15th year, Shorty crossed over the rainbow bridge. And while everyone was sad, Shorty was no longer in pain. Biscuit had friends in the neighborhood he could sniff at, but it wasn't quite the same.

Several months later, the third and final tragedy would befall our our sweet old friend. And I promise, it's the last of the sadness before the light. The family needed to move once more. This time, they would try to bring Biscuit no matter what. The family contacted a local shelter in their new home so they could begin the process of getting Biscuit a new friend. They made arrangements to fly Biscuit instead of drive as that was the best advice from Biscuit's doctors.

While the family was getting everything ready, Biscuit was being pampered by loving friends who also had rescues and he was on his best behavior with his friends. When it was time to fly, the flight was canceled. The family tried two more times. And each time, the flights were canceled. Not enough staff. Temperature was too hot. Biscuit's doctor and the family's trusted advisors (old dog haven rescue) encouraged the family to think about what was best for Biscuit and try to re-home him.

This time around was different. The first time this happened, the family was unprepared and the neighbors were unprepared. This time, everyone was older and wiser and followed all proper protocols to re-home Biscuit in the best way possible. Biscuit will move no more as he is living his best senior dog life (15 we think!) with some of the nicest, most caring people who also have a rescue dog! Biscuit once again has a friend and a home. Biscuit's furever family sends updates and pictures and the family sends love and gratitude across the many miles to both Biscuit and his furever family and friends.

While Biscuit was settling into his last home, the family was still missing him. They knew they needed to re-think bringing another senior dog home. While it was a wonderful experience, every time the family adopted senior dogs, they had to say goodbye not too long after. After much debate, the family decided to try something new for the first time: a puppy.

Family Weekend at Miss Halls

Cassidy is thriving in her new school. She is in a community that has space and access to intentionally and thoughtfully live out its values.  While a return to on campus living was not in our plans, it has allowed us to be nearby as she dances along the edges of independence.  Matt has a front row seat to daily life at the school, and was chauffering to Savvy's soccer game while I got to be the parent of a day student who is also a resident for the two day event.  Friday night's concert was a mix of choral and instrumental pieces. SO much talent! It's the second time Cass has played Sir Duke in a concert and she seemed very happy with her performance. She knew we were, as evidenced by our cheering 🤗 On Saturday I got to be a student! I went to all of her classes for 20 minutes for a real lesson. I usually interact with her teachers in a social setting; eating meals together, attending events, going to the adult wellness stuff, random hallway conversations. Getting to see

Birthdays & Graduation & May fun

May was quite the month in the Team Smith house... I participated in my second MCLA graduation, and Savannah's soccer team played a lot of games. Cassidy had a 14th birthday party complete with mini golfing, ice cream, and sushi. Sunday was mother's day. We spent the day in Manchester eating, shopping, and hiking. Brunch at Ponce was delish! The Northshire Bookstore never disappoints. The baby goats at Hildene were cuter than last year. Cass had several band performances. She did a great job marching in lots of parades. We did an overnight staycation in VT and had the whole place to ourselves! And enjoyed our first outdoor concert of the summer season... There was a supercute plant sale at Matt's work. It's an annual tradition where 9th graders make pottery, grow seedlings and plants, then sell to the community. Oh! I cannot forget, we attended the annual town meeting. If you have ever watched Gilmore Girls and witnessed a Stars Hollow mtg, you have been to our town mt

Washington DC

Well this was a first! See that picture above? See the last name? Yup, that is my last name. I cannot describe how awestruck it was to walk around the Smithsonian African American Museum, turn a corner, see a photo, read the description, and realize I shared a last name, an uncommon last name, with the person in the image. All. The. Feels. And just days before the Goree Family Reunion?! Stahp it! What in the Wakanda was happening?! I'll tell you what was happening: the ancestors, my ancestors, were telling me to get ready for the reunion to be a healing, joyful experience not to be taken for granted. And it was.  When we confirmed with momma the reunion was really happening, we wasted no time locking down our airfare with a combo of points and red-eye flights for the four of us. These were not direct flights, they were cheap flights! Which meant a layover or two. The layover happened to be in DC. Matt and I have been to DC together, and we've been on our own lots of times. But,
