PNW to the Berkshires: Oly, Tacoma, Burlington, Winthrop

One 19ft trailer and 5 movers + Multiple donation runs.

Leaving Ken Lake and the BEST neighbors ever.

So. Many. Boxes.

In four, short years we made friends for a lifetime. While we thought the northwest would be home for much longer, the universe had other plans! And we are lucky and grateful for the friends who we call family, and excited to continue those relationships long into the future. It has been a hard couple of weeks. The stress of moving was tricky to navigate. The grief over leaving our community would hit at random moments. The excitement about this next adventure left no doubts about our decisions and provided a constant, positive place to focus.

Goodbyes can be awkward, drawn out, and really hard. This time was different. Small gatherings provided heartfelt and genuine opportunities for real conversations in a way that brought both closure and space to imagine new ways of staying connected. Team Smith was awash in generosity and an outpouring of love. Scheduling is so complicated right now: we were super appreciative of the drive by goodbyes, the quick stops, the brief convos over tea on the porch, the outdoor walks, the emails and phone calls and facetimes and zooms, the notecards, and even the folx who we didn't see but sent us well wishes just the same. We love y'all <3

Had no clue there were life sized chutes and ladders!

Rental in Hilltop for a couple weeks while we sold our house.

Thank you, Julie! Popped it open on my last work day :-)

Biscuit is meeting us on the east coast.

Last work day!

It was so hot upstairs, the girls slept on the camping mattress in the rental for a few nights.

They know me so well! I LOVE flowers, anytime. Such a beautiful send off from the SAL friends!

Biscuit got lots of extra attention....

This road-trip is the first cross country adventure for the girls! Cassidy got her second covid shot the morning we started driving. We left a little early to have some time for her to rest overnight before hitting the mountains. State Route 20 opened a few weeks ago and we took advantage of driving to the North Cascades. The emerald lakes were stunning! Too many waterfalls to count.

Winthrop is a charming town with no stoplights. So much to do here! I wish we were staying longer. And wow, we really should have visited some time in the last four years! Lesson learned.

After you clean your room...

This evening Cassidy revealed to me a small secret to keeping her occupied. After dinner she asked me if she could watch a show. We don't have tv, but we do have netflix through the wii on our tv and we watch all the greatness that PBS and Nickelodian have to offer! Except for Caillou because I think he's kind of whiny. Anyway, she gets to watch limited amounts of Diego, Dora, Dinosaur Train, Super Why, Word World, etc and sometimes we throw in some Cosby Show for good measure. She'll pick two shows and watch one, 20 minute episode of each and then we call it good. Well tonight when she asked for a show, I told her she could watch one episode of her favorite after she cleaned her room. She went into her room and as she started putting toys away, she started playing with them. She'd go to put books away and start "reading" them. Twenty minutes later she'd start putting crayons away, then start drawing with them. Ten minutes later she'd start putting awa...

Dancing

Cassidy loves to dance. So far, any type of music gets her going! In this video we were cleaning the kitchen when she decided to break out. When she saw the camera she started saying cheese because she thought it was a real camera. I hope you can see it!

NASPA @ NOLA 2025

I am very excited to get to serve on the annual conference team for NASPA 26 in KC! As part of the planning team, we have several onsite meetings. One is at this year's conference to be in transition with this year's team. Several of my staff members were able to attend the conference as well. Below are some photos with friends and colleagues who I was so happy to reconnect with!  The rest are notes I took from a few sessions. I as going to delete them, then thought, y'all might be interested in some of the random things always on my mind and in process. Take a peek! Also, NASPA stands for National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. While there opportunities all year long to engage with different groups and regions, in person and online, the annual conference is the premier event where you can learn and hang out with over 6,500 of your peers in higher ed work!  Notes: The balance of crisis management and change management is ongoing. Rest is essential. Decisio...
