July and August 2020 Summer of Covid

Fall used to be my favorite season. For the most part it still is. Living in the PNW, I have come to crave the summer sun. We have had real sun for a little over a week. That warm, blue sky, run through some sprinklers, stay up late sun that makes you thing better days are coming and anything is possible.

Baking continues! Our neighbor gave us some rhubarb and these strawberry rhubarb tartlets were a hit! I love a light corn chowder with bacon and shrimp in the crockpot. And blueberry muffins with duck eggs! Best muffins I think we have made all summer. Matt and I continue to work from home. We scheduled a real lunch hour, drove 15 minutes to a farm, and picked blueberries for these muffins. We picked enough to freeze about a pound!

I shared on facebook that we have been saving and planning to take the girls on a long roadtrip in a few years. We made our first big purchase- a used travel trailer. I'm so excited to get in there and demo this weekend. A local shop is going to clean out the rot and rebuild the frame and electrical. We're going to do everything else! EEEEEEeeeeeek!

We did a small day hike in Nisqually. At 7am, it was us and the birds :) This nature preserve is about 20 minutes away from us. So many birds! And tiny frogs on leave. And minx jumping off of logs. And beavers busy building dams.

Our dogs are old. This we knew. What we didn't know was just how old. Biscuit has heart disease and may have cancer. Shorty has arthritis. Both have serious dental issues- this we knew. We're trying to keep them comfy, but the time may come to put one down. We have started having talks with the girls about it and while I think they understand it, when the time comes, it will be hard. Fingers crossed we have at least one more season with our pups...

We continue to get in as much lake time as we can! On really hot days, it is more crowded than feels comfortable, so we play in the sprinklers in the yard. The girls helped Matt finish the treehouse stairs, providing another outdoor space to play!

Matt and I finished our floating deck out front! One more outdoor place to be and a very nice spot to wave to passing neighbors, eat dinner, watch the kids ride their bikes, and enjoy being outside while we can!

We are trying not to go stir crazy! But sometimes, the sillies take over. Random bouts of dancing or singing may occur.

July and August are going pretty quickly! School will be starting soon. And my favorite season will be upon us.

After you clean your room...

This evening Cassidy revealed to me a small secret to keeping her occupied. After dinner she asked me if she could watch a show. We don't have tv, but we do have netflix through the wii on our tv and we watch all the greatness that PBS and Nickelodian have to offer! Except for Caillou because I think he's kind of whiny. Anyway, she gets to watch limited amounts of Diego, Dora, Dinosaur Train, Super Why, Word World, etc and sometimes we throw in some Cosby Show for good measure. She'll pick two shows and watch one, 20 minute episode of each and then we call it good. Well tonight when she asked for a show, I told her she could watch one episode of her favorite after she cleaned her room. She went into her room and as she started putting toys away, she started playing with them. She'd go to put books away and start "reading" them. Twenty minutes later she'd start putting crayons away, then start drawing with them. Ten minutes later she'd start putting awa...

Dancing

Cassidy loves to dance. So far, any type of music gets her going! In this video we were cleaning the kitchen when she decided to break out. When she saw the camera she started saying cheese because she thought it was a real camera. I hope you can see it!

NASPA @ NOLA 2025

I am very excited to get to serve on the annual conference team for NASPA 26 in KC! As part of the planning team, we have several onsite meetings. One is at this year's conference to be in transition with this year's team. Several of my staff members were able to attend the conference as well. Below are some photos with friends and colleagues who I was so happy to reconnect with!  The rest are notes I took from a few sessions. I as going to delete them, then thought, y'all might be interested in some of the random things always on my mind and in process. Take a peek! Also, NASPA stands for National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. While there opportunities all year long to engage with different groups and regions, in person and online, the annual conference is the premier event where you can learn and hang out with over 6,500 of your peers in higher ed work!  Notes: The balance of crisis management and change management is ongoing. Rest is essential. Decisio...
