When our friend Holly introduced us to Hipcamp, I was super skeptical. People who own enough land that they rent out parts of it for outdoor camping? Sounds like the makings of a horror movie. However, people can be really resourceful and we already take advantage of other local entrepreneurial services from house cleaning to air bnbs. Plus the reviews were good.
I am so glad we did it! This beautiful farm is about an hour south of us. There is a creek just behind the campsite with super easy access, tons of animals for the kids to see and chase, covered benches, indoor toilet/shower, fire pits, and friendly hosts. The downside was our proximity to then trains thundering past at random times all day and night. The upside was everything else. They unexpectedly offered wifi in a "community space" near their house, complete with coffee, chairs and more fire pits! My cell signal was better out there in the middle of their farm amongst the trees than it is in my office! lol.
We drove a little further south to go hiking near Mt St Helens, then a little north to check out a fair. Yes, they had fried foods and carnival rides, and even a youth circus. A mind-blowing, super impressive troupe of young folx doing incredible circus acts. Circus/performer culture is a serious thing out here- I never would have guessed it!
Savvy started to cough and had a low fever, so Matt and I brought her home a little early, leaving Cass to stay and have some time with her friend a little longer. The weather was not perfect, but the company was. And I'm so glad we took a break from unpacking to just be together.
