Savvy went back and forth between wanting a unicorn party and mermaid party. I don't know what marketing genius took over this past summer, but there has been a serious re-birth of unicorns and mermaids a la Lisa Frank! On a day when she was thinking under the sea ideas, I bought some mermaid napkins on sale at the store and sealed the deal. We couldn't change once we had bought themed napkins, right?
Mermaids it is! The parks and rec in our city has a rentable house on the water (cuz that's where mermaids hang out you know) and became the venue for the shindig. Cheaper, and cleaner, than chuck e cheese, everyone was quite pleased! The playground right outside was a hit, even in the rain. We did lots of arts and crafts. Cookie decorating with mermaids, clam shells, and sea horse cut outs, and coloring pages flew. Our friend Gillian came dressed as Ariel, did face painting, and put temp tattoos on the kids. And a wonderful parent named Rachel staffed our table for using a hot glue gun to make crowns out of headbands, sea shells, and sea glass.
Cass spent a bit of time cutting sea star shapes into bread for pb and js. Don't worry, we did not waste the leftover bread, we made a french toast casserole for breakfast! The crockpot of soup was also welcome in the chilly cold. And we danced to the little mermaid soundtrack.
I wish I had taken pics of the pinata. It was the one with ribbons where each kid can pull a ribbon and see which one is the magic one to open the door. When that candy came pouring out, it was a mad scramble of legs and arms! I laughed so hard. And we were extra grateful we didn't get the one you have to hit with a bat! LOL.
Not a bad way to spend a Sunday afternoon :-) Thankfully, some parents took pics and sent them to me, because I completely forgot! We have a couple below, but huge thank you to all the families who joined us to celebrate Savvy's birthdays!
This time last year, we were in Canada for Savvy's birthday, this year she was so excited to invite her friends to a party. It was one more recognition of feeling at home and settled in Washington and at their new school.
