New Address!

We closed on our house! This process was so smooth and just meant to be. When I was in Olympia late May, I stopped at Trader Joe's to pick up snacks for my hotel room (y'all know I need my snacks) and there was a realty company in the shopping center. Van Dorn. I walked in around the end of the day to ask a question about neighborhoods and this wonderful woman named Allison spent the last 30 minutes of her day with me. I had a bicycle path map that broke down the neighborhoods and towns better than any other map I had seen thus far. She was so nice!

I asked if they had preferred loan servicers and she gave me a few, but said she really liked Dallon from Evergreen Home Loans. I thanked her and said if I got the job I would call her. Five days after that I accepted the position and I was calling both Allison and Dallon to start our house search!

Matt and I did all kinds of investigating and narrowed our search to a couple specific neighborhoods. When we told Dallon our price range and what we were looking for, he laughed and said, "But you qualify for so much more! Are you sure you don't want something bigger?" Oh friend, that's how people get in trouble! Plus, I'm not trying to clean a whole lotta house. And, I would much rather spend $$ on traveling and taking the girls places and visiting framily. I was super appreciative that he didn't push us, just wanted us to know our options and if we saw something we could go up. Thus, the search began in earnest, as we wanted to have a few houses in mind for when we planned to visit for a weekend.

Every couple of days, we'd send houses to Allison that we liked, Dallon would draw up a pre-approval letter, Allison would contact the sellers' agents, and the house would be gone before you knew it. About 3 weeks later, the week we were getting ready to fly up here, we found this house. It had been on the market for 2 days with no offers. Allison set up a showing, Dallon got the letter, and we set up meetings with the zoned school. Two days later we were here, looking at the house. It was the second one we saw that day. And we knew! I was immediately sold. Matt wasn't convinced until he met the school admins, then he was all in. With each nugget of info revealed, I fell more in love with this house soon to become our home.

-Down the street is a Christmas Tree Farm.
- Across the street are trails through a forest
-Easy freeway access
-Under budget!!!
- Awesome school
- 3 toilets (a luxury one appreciates after having been a 1 toilet home the last year and a half)
-and the piece de resistance...there is a cupboard under the stairs!!! I kid you not. I don't joke about Harry Potter details.

What made this ironic was that going in to this search, I was adamant about wanting an older home with character and charm, no stairs, no HOA fees, no condos. And the house was built only 10 years ago, is a townhome, with delightful neighbors on one side, has stairs, and has a super cheap HOA fee. I'm sure God was giggling herself silly.

We put our offer in, then spent the next day touring 4 other houses. None of the other houses felt right and we had decided if we didn't find anything that weekend, we would go the rental route. That night, our offer was accepted, with the sellers kicking in some closing costs and requesting a 5 week escrow instead of the 4 week we asked for. Are you kidding me? Sold!

So where are we living now, you might ask?

When we drove up, we moved into a fully furnished guest apartment on campus. Matt flew back to Carson and has been staying with Aunt Kitty & Co. Tomorrow the movers arrive and Saturday my momma will be here! We could not have planned this any better...it was meant to be.

I am so excited to make this our home! Bring on the diy and countless trips to Lowes!

If you would like the new address, please email or text us, though you know if we have your address you will get a cute postcard update probably some time in September  :-)

R.O.P.E. in Accra, Ghana- July 2024

Joining Rites of Passage and Empowerment (ROPE) has been key in helping us find community out here in the Berkshires. No sugar coating- this county is both white, rural, conservative, racist and full of theatre, music, the outdoors, and pockets of loving, open-minded people. Massachusetts may be the most liberal state in the US, but we are far from Boston. Here, minutes from New York and Vermont, the sounds of performative equity can be heard from the tone deaf school administrators who "don't see color" and have voiced that "race was not an issue till we brought it up", to the lack of representation in politics, restaurants, stores, and general day to day. We have lived in places across the country, and have yet to stumble upon a place that felt fully welcoming. I don't say this to complain, it is merely a statement of my lived experience thus far and an acknowledgement of the work it takes as a Black woman to make friends, have meaningful relationships, g...

After you clean your room...

This evening Cassidy revealed to me a small secret to keeping her occupied. After dinner she asked me if she could watch a show. We don't have tv, but we do have netflix through the wii on our tv and we watch all the greatness that PBS and Nickelodian have to offer! Except for Caillou because I think he's kind of whiny. Anyway, she gets to watch limited amounts of Diego, Dora, Dinosaur Train, Super Why, Word World, etc and sometimes we throw in some Cosby Show for good measure. She'll pick two shows and watch one, 20 minute episode of each and then we call it good. Well tonight when she asked for a show, I told her she could watch one episode of her favorite after she cleaned her room. She went into her room and as she started putting toys away, she started playing with them. She'd go to put books away and start "reading" them. Twenty minutes later she'd start putting crayons away, then start drawing with them. Ten minutes later she'd start putting awa...

Back 2 School 2024/2025

The start of a new school year is scattered and quite full as we begin the fall with a bang on multiple campuses.  We gave Savannah a few options for her start to middle-school. She was at WES for 3 years and had made a solid, core group of friends- super strong connections! All of them were headed to the zoned school of Greylock regional, grades 7-12. Going to Greylock wither friends would mean we would have to drive her, school choice does not provide a bus. It would mean she could not do all the things because of the commute and our schedules, her options to get involved would be limited. If she chose to go to the school we were now zoned for, she would be walking distance to Miss Halls and could do alllll the things- go for it! Join every club, try out for the plays, do all the sports.  Y'all already know, Savvy chose her friends lol. It is hard. And she is so happy. And never complains, because she understands with this choice, her options are limited. We have been ...
