A round up of fun

Y'all, I am trying to catch up on blogposts. So close! Is it wrong to group several things into one? No? I didn't think so either! Let's see if I can remember what we were doing in these pictures ;-)

We love a good sleepover! Some of Cass' friends from school came over. We made cookies and Matt took no mercy in a fierce game of jenga.

I'm not sure what YeVonne and I were doing, but we were cute! I'm sure it was a meeting where we were talking about ways to serve students, I just cannot tell you which one.

Savvy was reading something somewhere....Oh, I think this was a doctor's app! Yup. She had strep. She sure does look happy for someone who was crying and miserable not 10 minutes before. MMhmm, it's all coming back....

I LOVE any opportunity to hang with my Goddaughter Salma! That child is smart!! We were having dinner at their place last night (again- so sorry for the time confusion, but at least the food was good!) and she climbed up a play kitchen set, then said "down" and climbed down.

These are from a neat art installation that was purposely created in the middle of nowhere outside Las Vegas. Our conference delegation had just completed several days of intense workshops (we presented too!) about college access for Latinx students. It was fabulous. Helping and supporting marginalized students, helps everyone. So don't worry folks- today we are working with these students, and the lessons we learn we can apply as we work with the next group. If you read the beginning of this blurb and thought, "Well why aren't they helping me?", 1) We are, you just don't know it, 2) We should meet up and chat about why you feel that way. But be prepared, I come with research and data my friend!

I found these cute satin bonnets on Etsy! A shop owned by a woman of color who makes these by hand and then sells them at a super reasonable price! #Protecttheedges

Easter egg hunt at TMCC hosted by classified council is a ton of fun! There were some parents who were way into it this year. We watched in awe as one mom charged out in front of all the kids, including her own kid, and was picking up eggs and toys like her life depended on it!
It's not that serious and it's for the kids folks.

We had Easter dinner at our place and folks came over to play and eat! It started raining and the kids were still outside. I love a good bounce house! And I love a good potluck. Albert's grilled sausages, Deaon and Jay's onions and mac and cheese, Laura and Mark's potatoes and rolls, and April and Kay's veggies made for one delicious meal!

Sometimes when I am dropping off Cassidy, I catch a glimpse of what she will look like in 10 years. My heart stops, my breath hitches, my eyes water. I often will call her back to the car for one more hug and kiss, and sometimes a photo op that I look at throughout my workday.

The March for Science was so fun!  The signs at this march were a little more kid friendly than the Women's March too :-)  Mom bought these genius shirts for the girls back in December when we were in Vegas ( When I get to go to Vegas for work, I take the girls when possible and just stay at mom's house). We ran into all the animals and all the friends!

This past Spring I was excited, happy, and so humbled to be included in the Queen Connection, a mentoring group at UNR. My mentee is so fabulous!!! Her name is Keeley. She is going places :-) Though right now, she went home for the summer. I miss her. Y'all should have seen how these girls went wild for the ice cream truck at one of our get togethers!

The ever handsome Dr. Smith and I at the Anthony Hamilton concert. Enjoyed every minute right up until the last second when I realized he wasn't singing my favorite song (Can't Let Go). I was not a happy camper. Dr. Smith had to do all he could to remind me of how wonderful the show was and how great date night was and how lucky we were to see him to begin with...I still can't let go!

One more sleepover! This time, we made pizza. Seriously, if you need to go out of town and need some overnight help with your well behaved kids, call me. The more the merrier! I have longed for a big family, and having friends spend the night fulfills that wish just a bit ;-0)

We got to experience Gracie kick butt at a volleyball game!!! #6. The smart and beautiful one with a fierce serve? Yup, that's her. I swear the other team was one point away from winning, then Gracie stepped in to serve, and it was game over. She made a bazillion points and they won the 3rd game!

Heeeeeyyy Dr. Shannon Taylor! I loved her class and not just because it was my LAST class in the doc program either. I learned so much about mixed methods. Totally changed the way I think as a researcher. This was the last Monday...just days before team smith celebration weekend began.

I remembered more than I thought I would!

R.O.P.E. in Accra, Ghana- July 2024

Joining Rites of Passage and Empowerment (ROPE) has been key in helping us find community out here in the Berkshires. No sugar coating- this county is both white, rural, conservative, racist and full of theatre, music, the outdoors, and pockets of loving, open-minded people. Massachusetts may be the most liberal state in the US, but we are far from Boston. Here, minutes from New York and Vermont, the sounds of performative equity can be heard from the tone deaf school administrators who "don't see color" and have voiced that "race was not an issue till we brought it up", to the lack of representation in politics, restaurants, stores, and general day to day. We have lived in places across the country, and have yet to stumble upon a place that felt fully welcoming. I don't say this to complain, it is merely a statement of my lived experience thus far and an acknowledgement of the work it takes as a Black woman to make friends, have meaningful relationships, g...

After you clean your room...

This evening Cassidy revealed to me a small secret to keeping her occupied. After dinner she asked me if she could watch a show. We don't have tv, but we do have netflix through the wii on our tv and we watch all the greatness that PBS and Nickelodian have to offer! Except for Caillou because I think he's kind of whiny. Anyway, she gets to watch limited amounts of Diego, Dora, Dinosaur Train, Super Why, Word World, etc and sometimes we throw in some Cosby Show for good measure. She'll pick two shows and watch one, 20 minute episode of each and then we call it good. Well tonight when she asked for a show, I told her she could watch one episode of her favorite after she cleaned her room. She went into her room and as she started putting toys away, she started playing with them. She'd go to put books away and start "reading" them. Twenty minutes later she'd start putting crayons away, then start drawing with them. Ten minutes later she'd start putting awa...

Back 2 School 2024/2025

The start of a new school year is scattered and quite full as we begin the fall with a bang on multiple campuses.  We gave Savannah a few options for her start to middle-school. She was at WES for 3 years and had made a solid, core group of friends- super strong connections! All of them were headed to the zoned school of Greylock regional, grades 7-12. Going to Greylock wither friends would mean we would have to drive her, school choice does not provide a bus. It would mean she could not do all the things because of the commute and our schedules, her options to get involved would be limited. If she chose to go to the school we were now zoned for, she would be walking distance to Miss Halls and could do alllll the things- go for it! Join every club, try out for the plays, do all the sports.  Y'all already know, Savvy chose her friends lol. It is hard. And she is so happy. And never complains, because she understands with this choice, her options are limited. We have been ...
