The Day of Fabulous...aka my birthday

Hands down, one of the best birthdays ever. This year I took advantage of every free birthday treat that came my way! I am sharing this with you, so you too may enjoy a day full of fun should you choose to sign up for free stuff and wanted to know where to go!

1. Free drink from Starbucks
2. Free car wash at Mission on McCarran- just show ID.
3. Free $10 at Cost Plus World Market- Must spend a minimum of $10 and be in their rewards program.
4. Free $10 at Labels Consignment Boutique. No min purchase required.
5. Free 6 pack of cupcakes (chocolate or vanilla) from Raleys Grocery Store. Must be a reward member.
6. Free bundtlet at Nothing Bundt Cakes.
7. If you get your teeth cleaned at Sala Dentist, along with the free floss, toothpaste, and toothbrush, you get a starbucks gift card!
8. Discounted pedicure at SOAK.

There are a couple more I did not take advantage of, as they were out of the way or there was not enough time, but these were my absolute faves.

And here is another good one-  only because of the locals discount. If you have the rewards card from the peppermill, you get 20% off everything all of the time. So I had a massage, family dinner, and a staycation overnight with Matt and the girls- and everything was 20% off!

Also, my family knows I LOVE Pati's Mexican table and got me the cookbook! Can't wait to invite friends over to taste and try these recipes ;-) It is the gift that keeps giving!  And Trader Joes had some of the most beautiful flower arrangements I have ever seen at a super affordable price- thank you TJs!

I did take an annual day off work as well and the day before I left, my colleague gave me flowers and stuff for the spa.  It so happend that President's Day was the following Monday so it was an extra- long weekend. Usually I am more concerned with valentine's day being so soon after because going out to dinner is stressful- booking a reservation is tough and there are a ton of prix fixe menus that are ridiculously overpriced. Spacing this year was in my favor :-)

The girls gave me a card that came with a sticker and when they asked me to wear it, I did not hesitate. I sported that sticker everywhere I went that day. Including an awesome lunch with one of my favorite people/mentor/professor!

It was a great day that was made better when I called my momma to tell her thank you for giving birth and had sent her a present.  I had never thought to do that before- thank the person who allowed me to have a birthday in the first place. I cannot remember who I spoke to or what I read where someone did this for their birthday, but it stuck with me all year. It humbled me and I honestly felt ashamed that I had not thought to do this before. Usually my momma is quick to call me on my birthday at 7:11am, the time I was born. This time, I called her before she called me. I need to think of something extra special to do next year, I want to continue this tradition of honoring my momma on my birthday. If you have any ideas, please share!

Yes, I was doing email and grading assignments. I was called out for it by a colleague at work! But then I sent her this pic and said doing work from here aint so bad. She agreed :-) Plus I do not enjoy that feeling of being behind and lost and returning to hundreds (I kid you not, ask any student affairs professional) of emails and voicemails.  I'd rather at least know what I'm returning to then go back to work trying to dig out completely.

R.O.P.E. in Accra, Ghana- July 2024

Joining Rites of Passage and Empowerment (ROPE) has been key in helping us find community out here in the Berkshires. No sugar coating- this county is both white, rural, conservative, racist and full of theatre, music, the outdoors, and pockets of loving, open-minded people. Massachusetts may be the most liberal state in the US, but we are far from Boston. Here, minutes from New York and Vermont, the sounds of performative equity can be heard from the tone deaf school administrators who "don't see color" and have voiced that "race was not an issue till we brought it up", to the lack of representation in politics, restaurants, stores, and general day to day. We have lived in places across the country, and have yet to stumble upon a place that felt fully welcoming. I don't say this to complain, it is merely a statement of my lived experience thus far and an acknowledgement of the work it takes as a Black woman to make friends, have meaningful relationships, g...

After you clean your room...

This evening Cassidy revealed to me a small secret to keeping her occupied. After dinner she asked me if she could watch a show. We don't have tv, but we do have netflix through the wii on our tv and we watch all the greatness that PBS and Nickelodian have to offer! Except for Caillou because I think he's kind of whiny. Anyway, she gets to watch limited amounts of Diego, Dora, Dinosaur Train, Super Why, Word World, etc and sometimes we throw in some Cosby Show for good measure. She'll pick two shows and watch one, 20 minute episode of each and then we call it good. Well tonight when she asked for a show, I told her she could watch one episode of her favorite after she cleaned her room. She went into her room and as she started putting toys away, she started playing with them. She'd go to put books away and start "reading" them. Twenty minutes later she'd start putting crayons away, then start drawing with them. Ten minutes later she'd start putting awa...

Back 2 School 2024/2025

The start of a new school year is scattered and quite full as we begin the fall with a bang on multiple campuses.  We gave Savannah a few options for her start to middle-school. She was at WES for 3 years and had made a solid, core group of friends- super strong connections! All of them were headed to the zoned school of Greylock regional, grades 7-12. Going to Greylock wither friends would mean we would have to drive her, school choice does not provide a bus. It would mean she could not do all the things because of the commute and our schedules, her options to get involved would be limited. If she chose to go to the school we were now zoned for, she would be walking distance to Miss Halls and could do alllll the things- go for it! Join every club, try out for the plays, do all the sports.  Y'all already know, Savvy chose her friends lol. It is hard. And she is so happy. And never complains, because she understands with this choice, her options are limited. We have been ...
