Last summer was our first interaction with the Nevada greyhound rescue. I know, you are thinking out loud, J- that is not a greyhound in the picture!. And you would be correct. But that is how this journey began.
We fell in love with the greyhounds! They are rescued from a race track in Tijuana. They are fostered and loved and then adopted. They are incredible dogs! Very quiet, minimal hair (not fur!), affectionate, good with kids, and crate/potty trained. You cannot have them off-leash because once they sight something they are gone. But all in all, we were very excited about adopting a greyhound. The plan was to wait till Springtime and go for it.
Well...like most well laid plans, this plan was to change. The past few months we have met many dogs. At many shelters. We wanted a smedium sized dog with little hair and shedding, preferably male and older. Every visit we got closer and closer, but never walked away feeling "that's our dog!". Until last weekend....
We took a trip out to the Canine Rehabilitation Sanctuary and Center to meet a couple of dogs. A very friendly pointer named Tater Tot was a bit too friendly for Savannah. A chihuahua mix named Buster honestly reminded me of a mongoose and not a dog. And then out walked Daisy.
That's our dog! Soon, her posting will come down from the website if it has not already. So we'll keep this one for prosperity's sake.
She was so sweet! The girls had no hesitation in being close to her. Daisy loved the affection, was not jumpy, did not lick them into oblivion, did not bark or shy away. She rested her head in my lap and took my heart.
The girls were very clear they wanted to adopt Daisy and bring her home. Daisy is 70lbs and hair all over- not what we originally wanted. And it did not seem to matter because it turns out, SHE was what we wanted. And Daisy comes with all vaccines, microchipped, and spayed? Heck yeah!
Daisy was with a family who did not have time for her. Her previous humans worked 12-14 hour days and left her outside all alone. During thunderstorms, she was left in the garage. As you can imagine, she does not like storms! Neither do my kids. I can see us all in our bed huddles under the covers as winds howl and lighting crashes. The girls crawl into bed with us now anyway, what's one more scared being? ;-)
We are honored and proud to present to you the newest member of Team Smith!
So many changes in our family this past week! Matt's sister Emily and her husband Chris had a beautiful baby- Genevieve Wren Layfield. My niece is going to be so spoiled by us.
