Savannah turns 3 years old...and it's Fall y'all!

Savvy's first two birthdays were spent as family days at Apple Hill in Placerville, CA. Silly me to think she would not understand the concept of a party for another year! Not an hour after Cass's party in May Savvy was asking when her party was. So we knew this year would be her first. I love birthday parties! The friends and family joining in to celebrate a new year and wish the birthday gal happiness. The cake! The merry decorations and excitement as invites get sent out and we plan what to do. I really do enjoy the whole process. Especially when the budget is on point (inexpensive) and the stress is kept to a minimal!

Quick sidebar: Watching one child celebrate a birthday makes me think how the other one is growing up too. Cassidy gets an allowance. She saved up her allowance to buy her sister a present. We walked through the store, and Cassidy can read! and count! and add! as we figured out what was in her budget and what wasn't. She paid for her own items, pulling out wads of dollar bills from her purse. My heart.....

Back to the birthday girl. Savvy had a her party at Andelin Family Farms out in Spanish Springs. It's a beautiful spot! The staff were super friendly and it is a well run ship- they know kids! Included in the package we went with the party goers got to:

1. Go on a hayride past  the spooky corn mazes and trees

2. Feed the barn animals. Three is a lovely age for kids and animals! They squealed and clapped and jumped and bounced, shaking with joy as they pet and fed the horses, ponies, pigs, llamas, chickens, goats, sheep, emus, and donkeys.

3. Ride the barrel train

4. Pick a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch

5. Sport cowboy hats

6. Play a ton of games

7. Watch a puppet show

8. Explore a hay bale maze

9. Get their faces painted

10. Hear a story in the barn and watch more horses and jump off hay bales into a hay bale pit with cushions

11. and jump into a corn kernal pit :-)

I think Mr. Smith thoroughly enjoyed shooting corn cobs at targets in the distance. As did Cassidy, she hit darth vader! Girl's got aim.

I started to feel myself stress out about the perfect food and cake thanks o the bittersweet relationship I have with pinterest. Luckily my hubby is pretty terrific and reminded me, it's just food and they will love whatever.  We made chocolate cupcakes and put little barn animals on top, had chocolate covered ice cream cones and vanilla bean ice cream, cut up some fruit and veggies, and had pizza delivered. This is one of the quirks I love about Reno. In the middle of a growing metropolis are thriving acres of farmland with a surprising amount of agriculture. When you see the pics from the farm, you'd think we were out in the middle of God's country...and Pizza Hut is less than 3 miles away!

Here are a few videos from today as well...

"Mama, it smells like poop"
"Well baby, we are on a farm..."

Happy Birthday Savvy!

Fall is my absolute favorite time of year. Not just because it leads up to Christmastime. The leaves, the smells, the chill in the air, the rain when we're lucky! Below are a few pics from the first fall festival of the season...

Family Weekend at Miss Halls

Cassidy is thriving in her new school. She is in a community that has space and access to intentionally and thoughtfully live out its values.  While a return to on campus living was not in our plans, it has allowed us to be nearby as she dances along the edges of independence.  Matt has a front row seat to daily life at the school, and was chauffering to Savvy's soccer game while I got to be the parent of a day student who is also a resident for the two day event.  Friday night's concert was a mix of choral and instrumental pieces. SO much talent! It's the second time Cass has played Sir Duke in a concert and she seemed very happy with her performance. She knew we were, as evidenced by our cheering 🤗 On Saturday I got to be a student! I went to all of her classes for 20 minutes for a real lesson. I usually interact with her teachers in a social setting; eating meals together, attending events, going to the adult wellness stuff, random hallway conversations. Getting to see

Birthdays & Graduation & May fun

May was quite the month in the Team Smith house... I participated in my second MCLA graduation, and Savannah's soccer team played a lot of games. Cassidy had a 14th birthday party complete with mini golfing, ice cream, and sushi. Sunday was mother's day. We spent the day in Manchester eating, shopping, and hiking. Brunch at Ponce was delish! The Northshire Bookstore never disappoints. The baby goats at Hildene were cuter than last year. Cass had several band performances. She did a great job marching in lots of parades. We did an overnight staycation in VT and had the whole place to ourselves! And enjoyed our first outdoor concert of the summer season... There was a supercute plant sale at Matt's work. It's an annual tradition where 9th graders make pottery, grow seedlings and plants, then sell to the community. Oh! I cannot forget, we attended the annual town meeting. If you have ever watched Gilmore Girls and witnessed a Stars Hollow mtg, you have been to our town mt

Washington DC

Well this was a first! See that picture above? See the last name? Yup, that is my last name. I cannot describe how awestruck it was to walk around the Smithsonian African American Museum, turn a corner, see a photo, read the description, and realize I shared a last name, an uncommon last name, with the person in the image. All. The. Feels. And just days before the Goree Family Reunion?! Stahp it! What in the Wakanda was happening?! I'll tell you what was happening: the ancestors, my ancestors, were telling me to get ready for the reunion to be a healing, joyful experience not to be taken for granted. And it was.  When we confirmed with momma the reunion was really happening, we wasted no time locking down our airfare with a combo of points and red-eye flights for the four of us. These were not direct flights, they were cheap flights! Which meant a layover or two. The layover happened to be in DC. Matt and I have been to DC together, and we've been on our own lots of times. But,
