Working on home...

Today is June 5. Savannah is 8 months old today! And today was my first day not having to go to work because I don't have a job. That's right! We made the decision back in January and started to really try to make it work. Remember that Sunshine blog entry a while back? Well, it is bright and sunny and the only clouds in sight are the real ones outside offering much needed shade :-)

I submitted my resignation letter earlier in the semester then worked to ensure whoever came in after me would be set up for success by creating how-tos, writing manuals and cleaning stuff up. I am so happy I made it through the entire semester! I wasn't sure I could do it, but I feel like I really had a lot of support. I don't know who's happier to not be driving in the car 3.5-5 hours a day, me or the girls!

So it was a bittersweet ending made mostly sweet by the fact that I get to spend an entire summer with my babies. Yay! There's still much to do. I am excited about a presentation I get to do with Vince from Delaware at the IPDS conference next week at Purdue. My most recent supervisor Ian and I will present a webinar in July. And I'm getting ready to start a doctoral program in the Fall. Yup, I'm still working, just not in a traditional 9-5 job and without commuting.  It's a nice compromise and balance. Was it Oprah who said, "you can have it all, just not all at once"? I will begin to peruse job sites in search of something part time in the Loop area that is walking distance from home and makes sense with the degree program I am starting. But there is no rush. And we'll be moving to a better apartment down the street in July. I'm thrilled to fill my summer days with events and fun things, exposing our girls to all sorts of Chicago excursions.

Today we went to the Field Museum. It's a discount day! If you are an Illinois resident it's free. I love museums and watching Cass get all excited about learning is amazing.  One of these pictures of the skyline shows Matt's building! It's the one we are moving in to soon. Matt also took today off to help kick-off my summer of unemployment :-)

After you clean your room...

This evening Cassidy revealed to me a small secret to keeping her occupied. After dinner she asked me if she could watch a show. We don't have tv, but we do have netflix through the wii on our tv and we watch all the greatness that PBS and Nickelodian have to offer! Except for Caillou because I think he's kind of whiny. Anyway, she gets to watch limited amounts of Diego, Dora, Dinosaur Train, Super Why, Word World, etc and sometimes we throw in some Cosby Show for good measure. She'll pick two shows and watch one, 20 minute episode of each and then we call it good. Well tonight when she asked for a show, I told her she could watch one episode of her favorite after she cleaned her room. She went into her room and as she started putting toys away, she started playing with them. She'd go to put books away and start "reading" them. Twenty minutes later she'd start putting crayons away, then start drawing with them. Ten minutes later she'd start putting awa...

Dancing

Cassidy loves to dance. So far, any type of music gets her going! In this video we were cleaning the kitchen when she decided to break out. When she saw the camera she started saying cheese because she thought it was a real camera. I hope you can see it!

NASPA @ NOLA 2025

I am very excited to get to serve on the annual conference team for NASPA 26 in KC! As part of the planning team, we have several onsite meetings. One is at this year's conference to be in transition with this year's team. Several of my staff members were able to attend the conference as well. Below are some photos with friends and colleagues who I was so happy to reconnect with!  The rest are notes I took from a few sessions. I as going to delete them, then thought, y'all might be interested in some of the random things always on my mind and in process. Take a peek! Also, NASPA stands for National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. While there opportunities all year long to engage with different groups and regions, in person and online, the annual conference is the premier event where you can learn and hang out with over 6,500 of your peers in higher ed work!  Notes: The balance of crisis management and change management is ongoing. Rest is essential. Decisio...
